PLA (polylactic acid) is the most widely used 3D printing filament. It prints at low temperatures, barely warps, and holds fine detail, so it runs on almost any FDM printer without an enclosure. That ease of use makes it the default for prototypes, miniatures, and indoor display parts. Its trade-offs are heat and impact resistance: PLA softens in a hot car or direct sun, so it is a poor fit for functional outdoor or high-stress parts.
Best for everyday prototypes, models, and indoor parts that won't face heat or heavy stress.
