PLA vs ABS: Easy to Print or Built for Heat

Pick PLA for models, prototypes and indoor parts: it prints on any machine with no enclosure and almost no warping. Pick ABS for parts that must survive heat or knocks, like car interior pieces and enclosures, and only if you can print it in an enclosed, ventilated space.

When to Choose PLA

PLA is the easy default. It prints at low temperatures, sticks well, barely warps and gives sharp detail, so it suits display pieces, cosplay, miniatures and fast prototypes.

It softens around 55°C and snaps rather than bends, so it is a poor choice for anything that gets hot or takes impacts.

When to Choose ABS

ABS handles heat up to around 90 to 100°C and absorbs knocks without cracking, which is why it has long been used for enclosures, tool handles and automotive parts. It can also be smoothed with acetone vapor for a glossy finish.

It is the harder material to print, so choose it when the part genuinely needs the heat or impact resistance.

Printing Differences

ABS needs a hot bed around 100 to 110°C and an enclosure to keep the air warm. Without one, large parts warp at the corners and tall parts split between layers.

ABS also gives off fumes with a noticeable smell while printing, so run it in a ventilated room or a filtered enclosure. PLA needs none of this.

Cost Differences

PLA and ABS usually sit in a similar price range per kilogram, so cost rarely decides between them. The real extra cost of ABS is an enclosure if you do not already have one. The live prices on this page show where the two stand right now.

PLA vs ABS FAQ

Is ABS stronger than PLA?

ABS is tougher: it bends and absorbs impact where PLA cracks, and it keeps its shape at much higher temperatures. PLA is stiffer, so for rigid parts that stay cool it can hold up well.

Can I print ABS without an enclosure?

Small parts sometimes work, but warping and layer splitting get much worse as parts grow. An enclosure and a hot bed make ABS far more reliable.

Is ABS safe to print indoors?

ABS releases fumes while printing. Print it in a well ventilated room or an enclosure with filtration, and avoid sitting next to the printer for long prints.
