How We Track Filament Prices

Every number on Filament Price Tracker comes from the same pipeline: we collect current prices from the retailers below, check them, classify each listing, and convert everything to a cost per kilogram. This page explains each step so you can judge the numbers, and cite them, with confidence.

Where the Prices Come From

Most of our listings come from Amazon US, through Amazon's official product data API. We also read prices directly from the online stores of ELEGOO, Bambu Lab, Polymaker and Creality.

We record new condition prices only. When Amazon's buy box goes to a used or renewed offer, that price is ignored, and a listing with no new offer at all is dropped from the tracker.

How Often Prices Update

Prices refresh about every 4 hours, six times a day. Each listing page and hub shows the most recent price we collected. Retailers can change a price between our checks, so the price at checkout is the one that counts.

Price per Kilogram

Price per kg is the listing's current price divided by its net filament weight in kilograms. A $19.99 spool of 1kg is $19.99/kg; a $31.99 two pack of 1kg spools is $16.00/kg. Weight comes from the listing and is checked against the product title and variation data, because spool weights on marketplace listings are often wrong or missing.

Listings with no usable price or weight are left out, since they cannot be compared fairly. See how price per kg works for why it beats comparing sticker prices.

Classifying Each Listing

Every listing is tagged with a material (PLA, PLA Plus, PETG, ABS and so on), one or more colors, and a spool weight. Titles on marketplaces are messy, so classification combines rules with model assisted checks, and anything we cannot place confidently is marked unknown rather than guessed.

A listing counts as a variety pack when it weighs more than 1.2kg and contains more than one color. Variety packs are kept apart from single color spools by default, since a multi color bundle is not a like for like comparison with one spool.

Market Averages and Deals

The market average for a material is the mean price per kg across its active listings, using spools of 0.5kg or more and excluding listings above $40/kg, which are almost always specialty or mislabeled products.

"Lowest" deal cards show the cheapest price per kg among 1kg spools, and for bulk, among single color spools of 2kg or more. Where enough listings exist, deal cards draw on well established brands sold by Amazon, ELEGOO or Creality; niche materials fall back to every brand and retailer we track.

Monthly Insight Reports

Our monthly insights use each listing's price as the month closed, taken from the prices we recorded during that month. Figures are medians rather than averages, so one extreme listing cannot skew a material's number, and they cover spools of 1kg or more.

Only listings still active are included, which keeps delisted and junk listings out. A material where a single brand makes up 95% or more of the listings is reported separately, because its "market" price is really one brand's price.

Corrections and Independence

Every listing has a "Report price" button. Reports come straight to us and are checked against the retailer. If you spot something wrong, that is the fastest way to get it fixed, or use the contact page.

We earn a commission on some purchases made through links on this site, marked with an Affiliate badge. Commissions never change the order of listings, which are always sorted by the price per kg you choose to sort by.
