How the Calculation Works
Cost per gram is the spool price divided by the spool weight. Multiply that by the grams a print uses and you have its filament cost. Spool size changes the math more than the sticker price does: a $12 spool of 500g costs more per print than a $20 spool of 1kg.
If your slicer reports length instead of weight, the meters option converts it using the filament diameter and the material's density. Denser materials like PETG weigh more per meter than ABS, so the same length costs a little more.
Common Questions
How do I calculate the filament cost of a 3D print?
Divide the spool price by the spool weight in grams to get the cost per gram, then multiply by the grams your slicer says the print uses. A $20 spool of 1,000g costs 2 cents per gram, so a 150g print costs $3.00 in filament.
Where do I find how many grams a print uses?
Every major slicer (Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer, PrusaSlicer, Cura) shows the filament weight in grams, and usually the length in meters, after you slice the model. Use grams when you have them; the meters option converts length to weight using the filament diameter and the material's density.
Does the calculator include electricity or machine wear?
No. It covers filament only, which is the largest running cost for most hobby prints. Failed prints, supports and purge waste all use filament too, so add them to the grams if you want a fuller number.
