PLA Filament Guide
Polylactic Acid, or PLA, is the old reliable of the 3D printing world and the most widely used filament. Derived from renewable resources like corn starch or sugarcane, it's favored for its ease of use and minimal warping. There is ongoing debate on whether PLA is organic enough to fully break down through regular decomposition in a reasonable timeframe. PLA filament is what most beginners initially learn with before moving on to more advanced or stronger filaments such as PETG filament.

Optimal Printing Settings
Every brand of PLA is different and calls for fine tuning. The following ranges are a solid starting point.
Nozzle temperatures vary by filament brand — typically between 200°C–210°C. Running a temperature tower calibration test is the best way to nail down the ideal setting. I write the temperature directly on the spool or in a notepad with the brand name so I don't have to hunt it down later. Ideally, build custom profiles in your slicer for each filament. Configuration varies depending on which slicer you use.
Some beds can use cooler temperatures as a cold plate. Personally, I've found it still takes more than the recommended heat unless you use glue or hairspray — though that may be specific to the plates I've used. I've heard good things about BIQU's CryoGrip if you're looking for a cold plate option.
PLA loves to be cooled quickly to maintain sharp details and prevent sagging. Keep the cooling fan off for the first few layers — most slicers are preconfigured to do exactly this, then ramp up the fan speed as the print builds height.
PLA Drying Time & Storage
A common myth is that PLA doesn't absorb water. While it's more resistant than Nylon, it is still hygroscopic. Wet PLA causes popping sounds at the nozzle and a rough surface finish.

Pro tip: If you're getting into 3D printing, a dedicated filament dryer is highly recommended — especially in high-humidity environments. Another trick is heating the bed of an enclosed printer and placing the spool directly on it for a few hours.
Common Challenges & Solutions
Bed Adhesion
When first starting out, PLA can be a challenge to adhere to the bed without proper leveling and calibrations.

Moisture Sensitivity
PLA is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air. Wet filament causes popping sounds, bubbles in the print, and stringing.
Solution: Store filament in a dry box or use a filament dryer before printing.

Because PLA is brittle and has a low heat resistance (softening around 55°C), it's best for items that stay indoors and don't take a beating.

Ideal for "form and fit" testing because it's cheap and prints accurately.

⚠ Heat warning: Do NOT use PLA in any environment where it will be exposed to heat. It will melt and deform at approximately 55–60°C. For higher-temperature applications, move towards PETG, ABS, or ASA.
