Strongest 3D Printer Filament
Polycarbonate (PC) is the strongest common filament for rigid, load bearing parts, and nylon is the toughest for parts that flex, wear or take repeated impact. Carbon fiber nylon adds stiffness for brackets and structural parts. If your printer is not ready for those, PETG is the toughest easy option.
What "Strongest" Really Means
Strength means different things for different parts. Tensile strength is how hard you can pull before it breaks, stiffness is how much it bends under load, and toughness is how much impact or flexing it survives. A stiff part can still be brittle, and a tough part can still bend.
Print settings matter as much as material. More walls, higher infill, hotter printing for better layer bonding, and orienting the part so the load does not pull layers apart can make a bigger difference than switching filament.
Our Picks
1. Polycarbonate (PC)
The strongest common filament for rigid parts, with heat resistance around 110 to 120°C. It needs a hot all metal hotend, a hot bed and an enclosure.

The toughest choice for gears, hinges and parts that flex or wear. It absorbs impact instead of cracking, but must be kept dry.
Compare Nylon prices →3. Carbon fiber nylon (PA-CF)
Nylon filled with chopped carbon fiber: much stiffer and dimensionally stable, ideal for brackets and structural parts. It needs a hardened steel nozzle.
Compare Nylon-CF prices →4. PETG
The toughest filament that is still easy to print. Tough, a little flexible and fine on an open printer, so it covers most functional parts.

Tips for Stronger Prints
- Add walls before infill. Four to six walls usually add more strength than raising infill.
- Orient parts so the main load runs along the layers, not across them. Layer lines are the weakest direction.
- Print at the hotter end of the recommended range for better layer bonding.
- Dry nylon and PC before printing. Moisture makes them weak and bubbly.
- Use a hardened steel nozzle for carbon fiber and glass fiber filaments. They wear out brass nozzles quickly.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the strongest 3D printer filament?
Among common filaments, polycarbonate is the strongest for rigid parts and nylon is the toughest for parts that flex or take impact. Carbon fiber blends add stiffness.
Is PETG stronger than PLA?
PETG is tougher and bends before breaking, while PLA is stiffer but snaps. For most functional parts that take knocks, PETG lasts longer.
Is carbon fiber filament stronger?
It is stiffer and more dimensionally stable, but not always stronger in impact. The fibers can make parts more brittle, so choose it for rigidity rather than toughness.
