How the 5-spool system works
Prusa announced Prusament PLA ColorMix on September 8, 2026. Rather than printing in one solid color per part, the slicer alternates which of the five spools lays down each layer, and the layers visually blend at normal viewing distance the way halftone printing blends a handful of ink colors into a full range. With Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow as the mixing primaries plus White and Black to control tint and shade, Prusa says a multi-material printer running all five can output 45 distinguishable shades. Printers with eight toolheads can load extra accent spools for a wider range still.
The technique itself, Prusa ColorMix, is not new. Prusa built it into PrusaSlicer as its take on filament-mixing color interpolation earlier in 2026. What launched this week is the filament: a PLA lineup formulated and packaged specifically to be mixed this way, rather than makers hunting down five compatible spools from different product lines.
Bundles and pricing
Prusa is selling the system three ways. The Translucent ColorMix bundle packs all five base colors plus Gold Glitter and Silver Glitter spools for $209.99. The PLA CMYK bundle covers just the four core mixing colors, opaque Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow plus Pristine White, for $143.99. Individual spools are also available at the standard Prusament rate of $32.99 per kilogram. Prusa's printing guidance calls for a 0.15mm maximum layer height (0.1mm preferred for finer blending) and a gyroid infill around 5 to 10 percent, with the best color results on vertically printed surfaces.
What this means for buyers
This only pays off on a multi-material setup, an AMS, MMU, or similar toolchanger, since the color blending happens by physically swapping filament between layers. On a single-extruder printer, buying the bundle just gets you five separate PLA colors at Prusament's usual per-kilogram price, with none of the mixing benefit. If you already print multi-material and want a wider palette without stocking dozens of spools, the CMYK bundle is the cheaper entry point at $143.99 for four spools.
Where it fits
