PETG Filament Guide

PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol-modified) has become one of the most popular materials in the 3D printing world, right behind PLA filament. It's an excellent choice for functional enclosures, mechanical parts, and aesthetic designs that need to hold up in higher-stress environments. PETG is generally preferred over ABS, which produces obnoxious and potentially harmful fumes. Its key strengths include high impact resistance and flexibility, thermal resistance up to around 80°C, chemical resistance to acids and solvents, and some UV resistance for light outdoor use. PETG is the filament most newcomers transition to after PLA due to its durability and ease of printing.

Optimal Printing Settings

Every printer and brand of PETG varies slightly. Start here, then dial in using small 5°C increments to find what works for your setup.

Nozzle Temperature 230°C – 250°C

Start at 240°C and run a small test print. Adjust in 5°C increments to find the sweet spot for your specific filament brand and environment. Building custom slicer profiles per filament brand is the ideal long-term setup.

Bed Temperature 70°C – 90°C

Start around 75°C. PETG can stick aggressively to certain surfaces — read the bed adhesion section below before your first print to avoid damaging your build plate.

Printing Speed 40–60 mm/s

PETG likes to be printed slower than PLA. Pushing speed too high causes stringing and poor layer adhesion — patience pays off here.

Cooling Fan 0% → 20–50%

Keep the fan off for the first few layers, then bring it up to 20–50% for the remainder. Unlike PLA, PETG does not want to be blasted with cold air — too much cooling causes poor layer adhesion.

PETG Drying Time & Storage

PETG is hygroscopic. Wet PETG causes popping sounds at the nozzle, failed prints, and excessive stringing and is often mistaken for a settings problem when moisture is the real culprit.

Note: PETG requires a higher drying temperature than PLA (60–65°C vs 40–50°C). Make sure your filament dryer supports this range. A dedicated filament dryer is highly recommended — especially in high-humidity environments.

Common Challenges & Solutions

Stringing and Oozing

PETG is notorious for hair-like strings between travel moves. Because it sticks to itself so well, it pulls away from the nozzle as the head moves.

Solution: Increase retraction distance and speed. From experience, retraction usually doesn't need major adjustment and the bigger fix is making sure the filament is properly dried first.

Bed Adhesion (Too Much)

PETG can stick so well to surfaces like PEI or bare glass that it tears chunks out of the build plate when removing the print.

Solution: Use a release agent like a glue stick or hairspray as a barrier. Never print PETG directly on bare glass. Personally, I've had no issues with PETG releasing cleanly from PEI build plates.

Moisture Sensitivity

Absorbed moisture causes popping sounds, bubbles in the print, and stringing. Symptoms that are easy to confuse with a temperature or retraction problem.

Solution: Store filament in a sealed dry box and use a filament dryer before printing, especially in humid environments.

Common Uses

PETG hits a sweet spot between PLA's ease of use and ABS's durability. It's the go-to when your print needs to actually do something.

Functional Parts

Brackets, enclosures, and mechanical components that need more strength and durability than PLA.

Garage & Workshop

Hangers, hooks, and organizers that need to handle weight and mild chemical exposure.

Outdoor Signs & Trinkets

Decorative outdoor items where some UV and weather resistance is needed — not for critical structural applications.

High-Temp Environments

Anywhere PLA would soften — inside cars, near appliances, or in warm storage areas.

PETG typically runs between $15–$25/kg. Shop around and try a few brands. Quality varies more than you'd expect. Some personal favorites: Elegoo, Polymaker, Overture, and Bambu Labs.
