PCTG Intermediate

PCTG filament guide

PCTG is a glycol modified copolyester, a close relative of PETG. It is usually described as a step up from PETG: tougher under impact, clearer in natural and translucent colors, and more resistant to chemicals, while printing on the same kind of open printer with no enclosure. It costs more per kilogram, so the question is whether your parts need what it adds.

What PCTG does better than PETG

The headline advantage is impact toughness. PCTG absorbs knocks and drops that would crack a PETG part, which makes it a good fit for clips, housings and functional parts that get handled roughly. It also tends to print clearer, so transparent and translucent parts come out less hazy, and it holds up better against many cleaning chemicals and solvents.

Heat resistance is only slightly better than PETG, softening under load at around 75°C, so PCTG is not the answer for hot car interiors or parts near heat. For that, look at ASA or polycarbonate.

Printing it

PCTG prints similar to PETG, usually a little hotter. Expect a nozzle around 240 to 270°C and a bed around 70 to 90°C, with no enclosure required for most parts, though one helps large parts that start to warp. Like PETG it can string, so tune retraction and travel, and it bonds strongly to smooth PEI, so use a textured sheet or a thin layer of glue stick as a release layer.

Check the spool, not the family

PCTG formulas vary more between brands than PLA or PETG do. Start from the temperature range printed on your spool and print a temperature tower before a long job.

PCTG takes up less moisture from the air than PETG, but it still prints best dry. A few hours in a filament dryer at around 60 to 65°C before a long print is cheap insurance.

When to choose PCTG

Choose PCTG when a part needs more impact toughness or clarity than PETG gives: protective covers, clear containers and lids, light diffusers, tool holders and parts that get dropped. Stick with PETG when it already does the job, since PETG is cheaper and far more widely available in every color.

For the basics PCTG shares with its cousin, see the PETG filament guide, and the PETG troubleshooting guide covers the same stringing and adhesion fixes.
