Creality launches at-home filament recycling on Indiegogo

Creality opened Indiegogo backing in April for a desktop recycling pair: the R1 shredder and M1 extruder. Failed prints, supports, and purge waste go in. Fresh filament comes out at roughly $5 per kilogram in raw materials. Here is how it works and who should care.

What the system does

The R1 is a shredder. It takes failed prints, support material, and purge strands and grinds them into 4 millimeter pellets at up to 3 kilograms per hour. A 100 watt PTC heater inside the unit dries the pellets as they are produced, which removes the moisture-handling step that traditional recyclers have to deal with separately. The R1 currently handles PLA and PETG, with ABS, ASA, and PC support listed as coming.

The M1 is the extruder. It takes either Creality's recycled pellets from the R1, or virgin pellets from any vendor, and produces 1.75 millimeter filament at speeds up to 1 kilogram per hour. Diameter tolerance is held between 1.70 and 1.80 millimeters with virgin material. Recycled material specifications were not published in detail in the launch materials.

Indiegogo Super Early Bird pricing locked the M1 at $799 and the R1 at $499. Add-on virgin pellets are available: PLA at $39 per 3 kilograms, PETG at $35 per 3 kilograms, and PLA carbon fiber at $59 per 3 kilograms. Shipping is scheduled for June 2026.

The economics

Creality estimates production cost at roughly $5 per recycled roll, compared to current retail spool prices of $20 to $30 for premium PLA. The math depends heavily on volume. For a hobbyist running a couple of prints a week, the $1,300 combined hardware cost takes a long time to pay back through filament savings. For someone running a small print farm or doing high-volume prototyping, the payback period collapses.

A more practical way to think about it is the tail of failed prints and supports. Anyone who runs a printer regularly accumulates a bin of failed jobs, support material, brim, and skirt. That waste typically ends up in the trash. The R1 turns it back into usable material. Even if you never feed virgin pellets through the M1, the M1 paired with the R1 recovers material you have already paid for.

What this means for buyers

For a typical hobbyist, this is an aspirational tool, not a cost-saving one. For a small print farm operator or prosumer running multiple printers, the economics start to make sense quickly. The crowdfunding format adds risk: shipping is promised in June 2026, but Indiegogo timelines historically slip.

Concerns to weigh

Recycled filament quality has historically been a struggle. Each thermal cycle degrades the polymer slightly. PLA recycled through 3 or 4 cycles starts to lose its mechanical properties even with careful drying. The M1 specifications do not address how many recycle cycles are practical before quality drops, and that is the most important question for anyone planning to use this as a primary supply.

Color is another constraint. The system runs one material at a time. If you mix colors of failed prints into the shredder, you get an unpredictable color output. Most users will end up sorting their waste by color, which adds a meaningful workflow step.

Compare against current spool prices

The recycling system makes the most sense when filament prices are high. Current PLA pricing on the tracker shows where the market sits today across vendors.
