Best Filament for Car Parts

Use ASA for most car parts: it handles the heat of a closed car in summer and the sun through the windows without fading or warping. ABS works for interior parts out of direct sun, and polycarbonate is the pick for the hottest spots. Avoid PLA, which softens in a hot car.

What Car Parts Go Through

A parked car in summer gets hot enough to soften many plastics, and parts on the dashboard or against glass get hotter still, with direct UV on top. Exterior parts add rain and road grime.

So heat resistance comes first, then UV resistance for anything the sun can reach. Toughness matters for clips and mounts that get knocked or vibrate.

Our Picks

1. ASA

The best all round choice. Heat resistant to around 90 to 100°C and UV stable, so it survives dashboards, exterior trim and mounts in the sun.

2. ABS

Similar heat resistance to ASA and often cheaper. Good for interior parts that stay out of direct sun, like trim clips and console pieces.

3. Polycarbonate (PC)

The most heat resistant, around 110 to 120°C. Use it for parts near the engine, lights or other hot spots, if your printer can handle it.

Tips for Printing Car Parts

  • Test fit with cheap PLA first, then print the final part in ASA or ABS.
  • Use at least four walls and solid infill near mounting points.
  • Print ABS, ASA and PC in an enclosure to avoid warping and weak layers.
  • Do not print safety critical parts. Seat belts, brakes, steering and airbag areas are not a job for a hobby printer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will PLA melt in a car?

It can deform. PLA softens around 55°C, and a closed car in summer can get hotter than that, especially on the dashboard.

Is PETG OK for car parts?

For interior parts out of direct sun, often yes. On the dashboard or near glass in summer it can warp, so ASA is the safer choice.

ASA or ABS for car parts?

ASA for anything the sun reaches, since it is UV stable. ABS is fine for shaded interior parts and is sometimes cheaper.
